Several artists — Rembrandt and Delacroix, to name a few — have created paintings based on the Sea of Galilee theme. It reflects the New Testament story of Christ asleep and his fisherman disciples hysterical at the approach of the oncoming storm. Christ calms them with his steady voice: “have faith in me and all will be well.”
A tsunami-being a great disturbance-seemed an appropriate name for this rendition of the Sea of Galilee. This time the disciples are asleep, and Christ is now hysterical. The story is no longer about faith, but reason. Will mankind wake up in time? I was particularly inspired by the invention and liveliness of Delacroix’s color and figurative work.
