Picnic

Manet’s Luncheon on the Grass comes to mind. This is a continuation on the theme of Magdalen and Jesus enjoying a moment together (as seen above in Re-enchantment of Jesus and Mary Magdalen). It could be pre- or post-Resurrection; we as viewers cannot be sure. My decision to use charcoal here was derived from my own interest in Jesus the man — charcoal being, quite literally, a down-to-earth medium. Also inspiring were Manet’s charcoal drawings and what they show us about the possibilities of charcoal as a medium.
