The inspiration here is composition and controversy. The composition, of course, is that of both Titian’s Venus of Urbino and the painting appropriated from it three centuries later, Olympia by Edouard Manet — the reclining figure in front (in both historical paintings a beautiful woman) attended by another woman in the background. The controversy, of course, is that the figure in the foreground in my piece is Jesus — rendered post-resurrection, alive and well while attended by Magdalen. I also explored glazing techniques as inspired by Titian in the 16th century.
