Drawing spiritual subjects has always fascinated me. Humanity cannot perceive the spiritual realm (at least not entirely) and so spirits have often been depicted metaphorically in the arts. To achieve this, artists often integrated animal features and human subjects to depict spirits — giving them attributes analogous to the traits they wished to exhibit. In this image, I depict Satan as an amalgamation of terrifying beasts, whose entire form takes the shape of a winged serpent. A frightening adversary, Satan confronts the Lord to question Job’s faith. Despite Job’s blameless character, Satan would challenge God’s claim that he is faithful, leading to the sufferings that follow throughout the book.
However, despite Satan’s sharp accusation, I depict God standing upright to protect Job, not wavering in the slightest. The Lord is both perfectly firm and perfectly gentle. Perfectly righteous and perfectly loving. Meanwhile, Job stretches out his arms in prayer, revealing both his weakness and his bravery in the face of adversity.
